Nomadic Notions in Austin offers a wide variety of classes, with one occurring almost every night. Our classes are scheduled in three month catalogues, so check back for new opportunities four times a year!

Another great benefit of taking our classes is that every student receives a 20% discount off anything in the store on the night of their class (with some limited exceptions).

General Beading

Back to Basics Bead Stringing
Instructed by Krystal
So you want to learn the basic technique for making necklaces and bracelets? We'll get you up to speed in this quick two-hour workshop that will send you home wearing one necklace and dreaming of ideas for your next one! Instruction will include choosing clasps, tools, and how to use a bead design board. Krystal will also show you how to use memory wire to create an optional bracelet in class.

Bead Brunch

Come join our knowledgeable staff on the 4th Sunday of the month -- check the dates below! Bring your handouts, we'll have the hot coffee and jewelry expertise. Set aside this one day of the month to finish projects and have some fun! Yes, we know the April one is on Easter -- we're thinking peeps and chocolate for snacks and an adult Easter Egg hunt in the store!

Beaded Tassel
Instructed by Rebecca
In this one evening workshop, you will create a unique multi-strand pendant by stringing beads on heat-treated nylon. Add a personal touch by finishing each strand with a charm. You can really make this one dazzle by adding fibers into the tassel as well. Couple this technique with a basic strung necklace (after class) and you will create a showpiece that looks a lot more complicated than it really is. This class is only offered twice a year.

Beginning Jewelry Assembly
Instructed by Mick or Kim
Four session class: the first step to your new beading addiction. Learn the basics so you can make beautiful jewelry on your own. Over the course of this four-week class, you will make earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. This comprehensive format discusses tools, findings, stringing materials, beads, and their history. This is both a lecture and a hands-on course, so get ready to learn and have a great time making several wearable art pieces.

Fireworks Pendant Necklace

Jill has been getting special requests to teach this one again, so make sure you sign up early! Make your own fireworks this year! A simple wire-wrapping technique combined with a cluster of beads makes an eye-catching pendant. Matching firework bundles can be made for earrings too! You will want to make these in lots of different colors to coordinate with your outfits. Every time Jill wears these little fireworks on her ears, people go crazy for them!

High Fiber Necklace

Mick only teaches this class once a year. Would you love the luxurious feel of soft fibers framing your face? This necklace has all that and more. It feels like you're wearing a beaded scarf around your neck, perfect for the chilly temperatures, or go without the fuzzy fibers for a sleeker, more contemporary look. Hey, all you knitters; bring your left-over tails and incorporate them in a new style of neckpiece. It's a scarf, it's a necklace -- it's awesome!

Want to learn how to make your own earrings and stop paying department store prices? We'll teach you all the tricks you need to know for making custom earrings. Techniques covered will include; simple loops, wrapped loops, component selection, adding chain, and design tips.

Let's Make Earrings Too (NEW!)

Have you ever wanted to make gorgeous chandelier earrings? This is the class for you! In this one-night workshop, we will teach you how to wire-wrap those tricky "top-drilled" beads, especially those fancy stones with very small holes. Eva will also teach you her special "sloppy wrap" technique to enhance the top of the stone. Some wire experience is helpful.

Madd About Leather

This basic "leather 101 class" is perfect for beginners. It includes a fabulous leather kit with a wide range of sizes to work with. Those of you already addicted to beads can take this class to supplement your existing knowledge and add a new cord to your stringing repertoire. Have you always wanted to make an adjustable sliding knot for your favorite pendant or learn how to use pre-made leather coil crimps, or even make your own? Try Madd About Leather and leave not only with a new skill, but 3 necklaces that make great gifts.

Multi-Strand Bracelet

Are you ready to move beyond basic stringing? This class covers three different ways to finish off multi-strand bracelets, with two distinct looks to choose from. You'll learn tips for effective design, the purpose of a spacer bar, and how to select and use cones. If you have ever been frustrated with a bracelet that just won't hold a twist, the "secret braid" technique that Eva reveals will be a revelation.

Valentine's Day Massacre

Catchy name, heh? Seriously, want to avoid crowed restaurants and all of that Valentine's Day hullabaloo? Let's have a "massacre your homework" night at the store! Just come hang out in the store, and work on stuff. No tuition, but let's have you sign up, so we know how many to expect -- we can get both rooms going and probably take about 21 people. Count Mick in; her husband thinks this is a "made up" holiday and refuses to play along. Oh yeah -- we'll have chocolate!

Knotting Skills

Knotting Knight

Let's try this one during the day for a change, but the name still says "knight." Nothing sets off a beautiful set of pearls (or beads) like knotting. Make the ordinary extraordinary, just by perfecting a simple knotting technique. Mick will show you three different ways to produce consistent, precise knots in between beads. The rest is up to you -- can you say practice, ladies?

Seed Bead Work

Beaded Crocheted Rope
Instructed by Mick
This classic technique is fashionable once again. Learn beaded slip-stitch, which can be used to create comfortable bracelets, or a sophisticated necklace backdrop for that perfect pendant. The end result can be delicate or chunky depending on what style & size of beads are used. Come check out the new sample at the store, the bead selection is all over the place. This technique is a little tricky, so Mick won't take more than 8 students.

Beaded Embroidered Pendant (NEW!)

Pendants are so versatile! You can wear them on chain, leather, silver or gold slides, or you can even create your own necklace to match. How would you like to learn to make your own bead embroidered pendant? We're going to spend a couple of nights learning fun embroidery and bead weaving techniques and exercising our creativity, and in the end, we'll each go home with our own beautiful beaded pendant. Cool, huh?

Bubbles and Bumps (NEW!)

Herringbone is a great stitch made even better when you add in "bubbles" and "bumps" made of seed beads of different sizes. You can make a bracelet or a necklace, or both! Add in more bubbles, or use just a few for a focal point -- the choice is yours!

Cellini Spiral

Time to learn a new "twist" on a classic technique? Try the Cellini Spiral! This simple stitch can be used independently to create a bracelet (what we'll do in class) or incorporated as a chain to showcase your other beady creations. With so many variations in applications and size, this is definitely a stitch you'll want to know. Rebecca has three styles to choose from -- come see them all! Sterling magnetic clasp included.

Chain Reactions

Ahh! Wow! Gorgeous! How do you react to Swarovski Crystals and seed beads? Learn to link together chains of crystals and seed beads using right-angle weave and dimensional right-angle weave. Bracelet or necklace -- you decide the length, then we'll complete your chain with a unique peyote toggle. Come see what kind of reaction you'll have.

Cornucopia
Instructed by Jill
A great beginner seed bead project that works up much more quickly than you think, and uses all those leftover beads you have from other projects. You'll use brick stitch to create two triangle-shaped ends, and then string a cornucopia of 5 to 10 strands to connect the two triangles into a beautiful bracelet. Use all one kind of bead, or create color themes with many styles and types of beads.

Dazzling Dutch Spiral
Instructed by Jill
Round and round it goes -- Mick won't stop until it reaches her toes! At least that's what Jill's guessing! Dutch Spiral is a variation on Peyote Spiral that allows you to make unique and dramatic spiral shapes, with draping sections and tight stitched sections intermixed. It can even be created with bugle beads!

Double Dutch

Twists and turns; this bracelet has them both! In this class, we'll create 2 curvy strips, then intertwine them together like double dutch jump ropes. We'll use this great technique and a snap clasp to make a seamless bracelet, but we'll be sure to inspire you to make nifty necklace straps to show off your seed beady pendants after class. This class/technique was previously known as "caduceus chain."

Hula Hoop Bangle (NEW!)

Bangles are all the rage in fashion these days, so let's learn how to make our own! We'll use tubular peyote to create a base that we'll embellish with oodles of seed beads for a textural, light-catching bracelet. Jill will also show you how to make sure that your bangle will fit nicely over your hand without making it so big it will fall off! Check out Jill's arm; she wears three of these at a time!

Look what you can make with our new line of triangle-shaped seed beads (which we have 35 colors of now)! A slinky herringbone neck chain leading to a simple but stunning open peyote circle element. Your circle necklace will be so much cooler than those you're seeing in the media! You can even use the circle to hang your glasses on, or attach a special pendant!

Ionic Column Bracelet

Bugle beads are cool, but it can be difficult to figure out what to do with them. Come make a nifty bracelet while you learn tricks to making sharp bugle edges safe in your seed bead pieces. This is another great beginner class for those curious about seed beads. Jill's students are overachievers who usually make more than one bracelet -- careful, you might be hooked!

Combine simple stringing and seed bead techniques in a multi-strand necklace and fill it with flowers and leaves. Learn a variety of ways to attach flower, leaf, teardrop, and crystal beads for a lush and unique garden look. We have a huge selection of glass flowers and leaves to help you wear a garden around your neck. We even have the Swarovski butterflies for you to perch on the vines.

Over the Top Crystal Bracelet

Do you want to make a statement? Do it with crystals! This bracelet will begin with a peyote base and then we'll embellish in every direction: sides, ends, and over the top with crystals! Trust us, it looks complicated, but is soooo easy! Don't be surprised if you are dreaming of variations while you are making your first one. We've seen them done in semi-precious stones and pearls by our fabulous students. And don't forget, this bracelet feels as good on as it looks.

Peyote 101 (NEW!)

Ever try to read one of those graphs in the magazines, but couldn't figure out how to start it, or even follow it? In Peyote 101, we'll learn how to start and follow a peyote graph while making a swirling patterned bracelet using large Delicas. This is a great way to learn a valuable skill, but with bigger beads to make it easy. After taking this class, you'll be able apply this pattern to different bead sizes or shapes ... (Rebecca's thinking triangles). You will leave with the knowledge to read any peyote graph, or even make your own!

Peyote Pendants (NEW!)

3 nights + 2 pendants = endless opportunities! In night one, we'll use a donut, coin, rivoli, or flat bead with varying seed bead sizes to create a peyote bezel (this part is similar to the technique previously taught in Peyote Possibilities Pendant). Then in night two, we'll create a bezel for the popular "oval" flat back cabochons. You know, those crazy beads without any holes! And on night three, ummm... bails and embellishments, of course. Bails for function so you can attach your peyote pendant to leather, chain or your other beady creations. And embellishments because we can! We'll embellish at bottom, or all the way around, or both!

Princess Peyote Cuff Bracelet

Don't be afraid of mixing colors! Explore our new colors of Delicas and learn how to combine beads with multiple colors and finishes to create an individualized work of art for your wrist while we teach you peyote stitch. The second night, you'll add a froth of fringe accent beads, and attach a hidden clasp so you're wearing a solid cuff of regal beads! We'll see if you can stop at making just one.

Twist, turn, twirl, or whirl -- call it want you want, but this necklace will make your head spin (in a good way)! This new technique from Rebecca combines a chain core with corkscrews of seed beads and Swarovski crystals, semi-precious stones, or pearls. It may sound complicated, but with so many options -- did I mention it can be a bracelet too? -- I bet you can't make just one. Come by the store to check it out, or view the image below!

Russian Splendor Necklace

This necklace, fit for a Tsarina, catches the light with firepolish beads inset within the netted tube. Add in the detachable mix-and-match Russian Leaves to make a good thing even better. The leaves also make great earrings! Jill has added a new element to the second night of class ... variations!

Treasure Bracelet
Instructed by Laura
Create a full, luxurious-looking bracelet, and use your tiny treasures and special beads in this afternoon workshop. Laura offers this class in square stitch, an off-loom technique that allows you to weave without a loom, or those annoying warp threads!!! Many of our students create themed bracelets by adding charms. We've seen these for sale at art shows for hundreds of dollars -- come learn how customize your own.

Tubular Herringbone Earrings

Ready to make seed bead earrings? This class is the second in a series developed by Rebecca; these earrings unite tubular herringbone stitch with varying lengths of chain and drops to create an elegant look. This is great for beginners, because we will learn both a seed bead stitch and some wire-working. And did we mention it's fast?! Chain, jump rings, wire, and wooden mandrels are included.

Zulu Zigzag Bracelet (NEW!)

Inspired by a Zulu beading technique, Jill has developed a modern version for our 21st Century wrists. A Beadalon core will support our modified ladder stitch columns, topped off by cool zigzags. This is a great class for beginners to try out seed bead weaving!

Wire Techniques

Advanced Wrapping Stones
Instructed by Krystal
Have you been waiting for the next big thing in wrapping stones? You’ll learn how to wrap a free floating crystal point and how to wrap those difficult-to-set cabochons. You must have taken our class Wrapping Stones, Rocks, and Crystals prior to signing up for this advanced level class. Wire and crystal points are included. This class is perfect for the experienced wire wrapper looking for a phase two class.

Captivating Cascade

This is a great class to learn or practice your bound loop technique while creating a unique pendant with those leftover beads from past projects you can't figure out what to do with. Using link chain, an assortment of beads and wire-wrapping skills, you can create a beautiful focal piece for any necklace or hang it from a chain for a look to wear every day. You've been seeing this one all over town, in catalogues, and on TV; now you can style one for your own tastes.

Clasps 1

Wouldn't it be great if your clasps looked as unique as your one-of-a-kind necklace? Now you can make special clasps at a fraction of the cost of regular ones. Leave those ugly spring ring clasps behind and let your creativity flow all the way to the "end" of your creations. Remember, you gotta take this class first before you can take Clasps 2! Decorative Wire Links

Swirls, twirls and open spirals done freehand (no jigs here, ladies). Learn five different wire links in this one-night workshop. Mick will show you how to add your own personality and a little flair to your designs with wire. If you already work with wire, you will love what doors this class will open in your creative mind! Oh, and we'll play with square wire and hammers too! Previous wire experience is recommended. All wire is included.

Ear Wires I

Spiral studs, French wires, and even kidney wires are covered in this class that will sass up your earrings! Give your earrings pizzazz while saving $$$. Learn how to make several unique and functional ear wires in this one-night workshop using sterling silver and gold-filled wire (included). We'll teach you how to use a burr-cup, metal files or sandpaper to finish your earrings professionally.

Introduction to Wire Wrapping

Some of our more challenging wire classes require prior experience with wire -- this is a perfect class to take first! Learn to create earrings, pendants, and charms in this 2 and 1/2 hour workshop. Learn to make custom chains and necklaces with a link-to-link technique. Add a touch of whimsy to your designs with coiled bead caps and spiral head pins. All wire is included.

Get "wired" in this one-night wire-wrapping extravaganza. Learn to make jewelry by creating links with bound loops of wire instead of cord. Use all the same beads, or mix it up with many different shapes, sizes, colors or materials -- the sky is the limit! Mick will focus part of the class on design, and show you how to add soldered rings or funky chain between the beads for a more contemporary look. Want to take a more challenging wire class? Loose Change Bracelet

Mick is obsessed with coins -- are you? When you go on vacation, do you make sure to bring coins back from foreign countries? Instead of storing them in a drawer, wear them on your wrist as a fabulous vacation memoir. In this two-night workshop, Mick will teach you how to use a new punch tool and wire to rivet the coins and connect them together in a funky, cool, coin bracelet. The punch tool is included in the class tuition.

So delicious looking, you'll have to stop yourself from licking your arm! Use wire, coiled wire, tiny metal spacers, crystals, seed beads (and the kitchen sink?) to make this dazzling bracelet. Mick has been wearing this one around the store for months while she tried to tweak it until the design was just right. Now it's ready -- are you? Can you handle 20 people a day grabbing your wrist and drooling on your rock candy gem? We'll set it off with a candy-crusted handmade clasp.

Spiral Nebula Earrings (NEW!)

Seed beads and wire? Leave it to Mick to try to combine these two rarely-combined materials into a beautiful, spiraling galaxy of earring magic. Learn the basic technique, and then Mick will show you variations that produce wildly different looks. These earrings can be classic and simple, or wild and bold just by choosing different beads. Leave class with at least 2 different styles in your repertoire, then go home inspired to create many others. Oh and did we mention -- no needles to thread?

In addition, we will create a beautiful bracelet fit for a night out on the town. Viking Knitting

You gotta take this class so you can take the Viking Knitting - Advanced , so come learn to knit like the Vikings. Seriously, this is an old technique of intertwining fine gauge wire that looks very difficult but is so easy to learn. Spend an afternoon learning how to knit the wire and then finish it off into a bracelet. At the end of class, you get to keep the wooden dowel and draw plate for all of your future knitting. You will leave with an understanding of single and double knitting techniques, as well as a finished bracelet.

You will learn how to create your own rings and link them up to create four different styles of chain link bracelets. Wired Charm (NEW!)

Ready to get wired with an extravaganza of spiral charms? This class is a wire-worker's dream! You'll finish your project, and learn lots of techniques to use in other applications. Think of it as wire boot camp 102! We'll start with basic wire techniques -- making headpins and simple loops and then move to more advanced techniques -- open triangle spirals, folded spirals, double spirals, spiral with infinity, and spiral links. Did I mention there are a lot of spirals? So bring your beads and get wired! Chain is included, but we are are gonna make everything else -- that's right ladies, Rebecca is gonna teach you to make your own clasp, too!

Woven Diamond Links

With its roots in basketry, this delicate wire technique can be seen in higher-end wire work jewelry being sold today. Craft your own elegant woven links in our one-night class. First, construct the basic wire-wrap bound loop that is the base of this link, then learn the delicate wire weaving technique that forms a beautiful diamond shape. Expect to complete one or two pendants in class, but go home with the knowledge to create intricate looking bracelets, earrings, and necklaces too!

Y Necklace

You have got to see the new styles of chain we have been getting! Use large funky chain to put a new spin on an easy technique and make this year's hottest style straight out of Vogue. Mick will teach you two different styles of wire-wrapping, and then you can let your imagination run wild with possibilities. Don't worry though, you can make them dainty and sophisticated, too, just by selecting the right type of chain and beads. Mick will discuss both style options. This is another great class to learn the bound loop technique.
