Nomadic Notions in Austin offers a wide variety of classes, with one occurring almost every night. Our classes are scheduled in three month catalogues, so check back for new opportunities four times a year!

Another great benefit of taking our classes is that every student receives a 20% discount off anything in the store on the night of their class (with some limited exceptions).

General Beading

Afternoon Bracelets
Instructed by Eva
Bracelets make a quick gift for everyone on your holiday list. We'll help you understand how to figure out the right size (or make it adjustable), select a clasp, and use crimp beads to secure the beading wire. What's beading wire? Oh yeah, we'll teach you that too! Incorporate alphabet cubes, charms, or birthstones to make the bracelet even more meaningful. Come spend an afternoon with us to design and create a fabulous bracelet. Remember, bracelets are just short necklaces -- use this class as a stepping stone to creating your own neckwear.

Afternoon Earrings

If you prefer to take our classes during the day instead of at night, then this is a perfect way to spend an afternoon learning how to make the simple loops or more secure bound loops required to make earrings. We will also talk about how to incorporate bead caps, chandelier findings, fancy headpins, and chain into your designs. The format for this class is similar to Let's Make Earrings. Afternoon Bracelets would be a fabulous companion class for this one!

Back to Basics Bead Stringing
Instructed by Mick
If you want to get into beading, this is an awesome first class. Mick will get you up to speed in this quick, two-hour workshop that will send you home dreaming of ideas for your next necklace! She will also cover different types of clasps, tools, and how to use a bead design board. Instruction will also include an optional memory wire bracelet.

Bead Brunch

Last year we canceled brunch because of the holidays, and oh boy, did we hear about it! So this year instead of canceling them we are just going to change the dates a little for this quarter. Because of the holidays, bead brunch will not be the usual 4th Sunday of the month -- check the dates below! Bring your handouts; we'll have the hot coffee and jewelry expertise. Set aside this one day of the month to finish projects and have some fun!

Beginning Jewelry Assembly

Four session class: the first step to your new beading addiction. Learn the basics so you can make beautiful jewelry on your own. Over the course of this four-week class, you will make earrings, bracelets and necklaces. This comprehensive format discusses tools, findings, stringing materials, beads, and their history. This is both a lecture and a hands-on course, so get ready to learn and have a great time making several wearable art pieces.

Create a Pendant

This is an awesome class to juice your creative energy and make eye-popping holiday gifts at the same time! Whether you incorporate them into a beaded necklace, or just wear them on a chain, let Mick show you how to add a little razzle-dazzle to your designs. This is a great project to use up all those leftover single beads in your collection. All your wire is included.

Finishing Touches

What is a crimp cover? Do I have to use a crimping tool when I use crimp beads? What's the difference between a base metal crimp and a crimp tube? When do I use a split ring, versus a soldered ring, versus a jump ring? These questions and many more will be answered as we discuss how to make finish your jewelry and make it more professional looking. Mick will make this class informative as it is fun!

Let's Make Earrings!

Want to learn how to make your own earrings and stop paying department store prices? We'll teach you all the tricks you need to know for making custom earrings (including chandelier styles). Techniques covered will include; simple loops, wrapped loops, component selection, adding chain, and design tips.

Madd About Leather

This basic "leather 101 class" is perfect for beginners. It includes a fabulous leather kit with a wide range of sizes to work with. Those of you already addicted to beads can take this class to supplement your existing knowledge, and add a new cord to your stringing repertoire. Have you always wanted to make an adjustable sliding knot for your favorite pendant, or learn how to use pre-made leather coil crimps, or even make your own? Try Madd About Leather and leave not only with a new skill, but three necklaces too!

Multi-Strand Bracelet

Are you ready to move beyond basic stringing? This class covers three different ways to finish off multi-strand bracelets, with two distinct looks to choose from. You'll learn tips for effective design, the purpose of a spacer bar, and how to select and use cones. If you have ever been frustrated with a bracelet that just won't hold a twist, the "secret braid" technique that Eva reveals will be a revelation.

Stretchy Woven Rings

Don't know the size of your secret Santa? In this class, you will make an adjustable ring that will fit them like a glove. Elastic cord, seed beads, and Czech glass combine in a crisscross manner to make their fingers sparkle. This technique is simple enough you'll even have the time to make one for yourself! Check out the new sample made with Swarovski crystal for extra finger sparkle.

Totally Teardrops Bracelet
Instructed by Jill
Make a quick teardrop bracelet in one night -- no tears, guaranteed! We'll be using beading wire, so you won't even have to thread a needle. The last time we taught this class, several students made variations in glass, pearls, and even semi-precious stones. This can be small and dainty or wild and spiky. You can tailor it to your personality with beads you select.

Knotting Skills

Knotting Knight

Nothing sets off a beautiful set of pearls (or beads) like knotting. Make the ordinary extraordinary, just by perfecting a simple knotting technique. Mick will show you three different ways to produce consistent, precise knots in between beads. The rest is up to you -- can you say practice, ladies?

Seed Bead Work

Adamas Bracelet (NEW!)
Instructed by Jill
Adamas is the Greek root of the word Diamond. Fitting, since we'll be learning to embed diamond shapes in this odd-count Peyote stitch bracelet. Changing bead sizes and colors creates a sculptural eye-catcher. Jill will also teach you how to make that challenging odd-count turn. It's easier than it looks!

Beaded Crocheted Rope
Instructed by Mick
This classic technique is fashionable once again. Learn beaded slip-stitch, which can be used to create comfortable bracelets, or a sophisticated necklace backdrop for that perfect pendant. The end result can be delicate or chunky depending on what style & size of beads are used. This technique is a little tricky, so Mick won't take more than 8 students.

Cellini Spiral (NEW!)

Time to learn a new "twist" on a classic technique? Try the Cellini Spiral! This simple stitch can be used independently to create a bracelet (what we'll do in class) or incorporated as a chain to showcase your other beady creations. With so many variations in applications and size, this is definitely a stitch you'll want to know. Rebecca has three styles to choose from -- come see them all! Sterling magnetic clasp included.

Cornucopia
Instructed by Jill
A great beginner seed bead project that works up much more quickly than you think, and uses all those leftover beads you have from other projects. You'll use brick stitch to create two triangle-shaped ends, and then string a cornucopia of 5 to 10 strands to connect the two triangles into a beautiful bracelet. Use all one kind of bead, or create color themes with many styles and types of beads.

Cosmopolitan

For all of you who love classes on a weekday afternoon, we bring you Cosmopolitan! Admit you love Swarovski crystal, come weave this sparkly bracelet with Jill, and you'll leave the class with a completed project on your wrist. No kidding! Even better, it's created with a single length of thread so you won't have to deal with ending and attaching new thread. If you have trouble sizing your seed bead bracelets, you'll love how easy and how accurate we can be sizing this one. For a more restrained option, Czech fire polish beads work just as well.

Dancing Waves

Everyone will want to know how it's made when you wear this bracelet. Using increasing brick stitch, you'll make waves of color dance together, and before you have the first one done you'll already be planning new color schemes for your next one! While you won't complete this bracelet in class, you'll come close as it's a quick project.

Dazzling Dutch Spiral
Instructed by Jill
Round and round it goes -- Mick won't stop until it reaches her toes! At least that's what Jill's guessing! Dutch Spiral is a variation on Peyote Spiral that allows you to make unique and dramatic spiral shapes, with draping sections and tight stitched sections intermixed. It can even be created with bugle beads!

Diamond Cuff (NEW!)

Are diamonds a girls best friend? Well, of course, and these diamonds are no different! Create a stunning bracelet using semiprecious stones, Swarovski crystals or pearls, and seed beads woven into diamonds. While this cuff is made of 2 rows of diamonds, we'll also cover how to create a single row diamond necklace.

Double Dutch (NEW!)

Twists and turns; this bracelet has them both! In this class, we'll create 2 curvy strips, then intertwine them together like double dutch jump ropes. We'll use this great technique and a snap clasp to make a seamless bracelet, but we'll be sure to inspire you to make nifty necklace straps to show off your seed beady pendants after class. This class/technique was previously known as "caduceus chain."

Edgy Herringbone Bracelet

If you're reading this description you must be looking for a thrill. Learn to do herringbone stitch, and then embellish with sparkly accents. We'll use large Delicas and Swarovski crystals, so this project will be both speedy and stunning.

Elegant Options Bracelet

Right-angle weave can be intimidating at first, but we'll take the pain out of it and you'll see how versatile it can be. First we will teach you to create a base, and then we'll discuss many options for embellishing the top so you can make your own unique creation! With so many choices for the top, you'll never make the same bracelet twice.

Enchanted Evenings Bracelet (NEW!)

Spend a few evenings learning the enticing circular brick stitch. You'll start by making some whimsical bead mandalas, and then join them together. Then Laura will show you how to add "blooms," until they all come together in a sparkling bracelet so mesmerizing you won't be able to take your eyes off it. This project is time-consuming (oh, there will be homework!), but the result is well worth the effort.

Half-Moon Earrings (NEW!)

What's good as a bracelet is even better as earrings! This class utilizes Rebecca's funky variation of peyote stitch that was previously in a class called "Half Moon Bracelet." Combine this delicate stitch with a bit of wire work and cap off your focal bead to create earrings that are sure to get you loads of compliments. Wire is included.

Hula Hoop Bangle (NEW!)

Bangles are all the rage in fashion these days, so let's learn how to make our own! We'll use tubular peyote to create a base that we'll embellish with oodles of seed beads for a textural, light-catching bracelet. Jill will also show you how to make sure that your bangle will fit nicely over your hand without making it so big it will fall off!

Look what you can make with our new line of triangle-shaped seed beads! A slinky herringbone neck chain leading to a simple but stunning open peyote circle element. Your circle necklace will be so much cooler than those you're seeing in the media! You can even use the circle to hang your glasses on, or attach a special pendant!

Leather and Lace (NEW!)

This class applies two individual techniques to LEATHER! In night one, we'll learn how to cleverly conceal a magnetic clasp with peyote stitch. Then come back for night two and we'll use right-angle weave to adorn the leather with loads of sparkly crystals. If leather is not your thing, that's okay -- you can use the the crystal adornments to add glitz to even simple stringing projects. The leather and sterling magnetic clasp are both included in the tuition.

Over the Top Crystal Bracelet

Ready for a fast seed bead project? Try earrings! The first class in a series developed by Rebecca, this class combines a flat right-angle weave stitch with a cross-drilled wire-wrap to create a versatile look. Russian Splendor Necklace

This necklace, fit for a Tsarina, catches the light with firepolish beads inset within the netted tube. Add in the detachable mix-and-match Russian Leaves to make a good thing even better. The leaves also make great earrings!

Tubular Herringbone Earrings (NEW!)

Ready to make seed bead earrings? This class is the second in a series developed by Rebecca; these earrings unite tubular herringbone stitch with varying lengths of chain and drops to create an elegant look. This is great for beginners, because we will learn both a seed bead stitch and some wire-working. And did we mention it's fast?! Chain, jump rings, wire, and wooden mandrels are included.

"Things are not always as they appear." While this bracelet appears complex and elaborate, in class you'll discover how straightforward it really is. This bracelet is composed of two netted layers woven together and is finished in a clean, sophisticated manner using multi-strand end bars. Whether you use Czech firepolish or Swarovski crystal, this bracelet feels as good on as it looks!

Wire Techniques

Advanced Wrapping Stones
Instructed by Krystal
Have you been waiting for the next big thing in wrapping stones? You’ll learn how to wrap shark’s teeth, make a free-floating crystal point wrap, and learn how to wrap those difficult-to-set cabochons. You must have taken Wrapping Stones, Rocks, and Crystals prior to signing up for this advanced level class. Wire, sharks teeth, and crystal points are included. This class is perfect for the experienced wire-wrapper looking for a phase two class.

Beady Pendant/Brooch

Formerly called Beady Brooches, but so many students wear them as pendants that Mick changed the name. These are fabulously large, spiky, and, dare we say, voluptuous? What started out as a class for demure little brooches has morphed into another bead creature entirely. Yeah, she'll still let you make the small, dainty, tasteful ones -- but you have got to come check out Mick's new samples. Keep in mind, because we make them on a pin back -- you can swap them from necklace to necklace or even wear them on a lapel.

Blingy Teardrop Earrings

Check out a fresh new approach to making earrings. In this one-night class, you will learn how to coil wire around another wire and make your own teardrop frame to attach your beads to. These earrings will be sure to make you the envy of your friends. Wire is included.

Wouldn't it be great if your clasps looked as unique as your one-of-a-kind necklace? Now you can make special clasps at a fraction of the cost of regular ones. Leave those ugly spring ring clasps behind and let your creativity flow all the way to the "end" of your creations. Remember, you gotta take this class first before you can take Clasps 2! Decorative Wire Links

Swirls, twirls and open spirals done freehand (no jigs here, ladies). Learn five different wire links in this one-night workshop. Mick will show you how to add your own personality and a little flair to your designs with wire. If you already work with wire, you will love what doors this class will open in your creative mind! Oh, and we'll play with square wire and hammers too! Previous wire experience is recommended. All wire is included.

Freeform Wire Gewgaw

Formerly called freeform wire choker, but choker was too limiting and gewgaw was our word for the day -- look it up! We only offer this class twice a year, so don't miss out on your chance to create a unique, "one of a kind" necklace out of wire. All you need for this class is some imagination and a sense of fun! Let Mick show you how to showcase special beads or a funky pendant, but either way, we're sure you've never worked with wire this way before. This is a great class for loosening up your creative energy and going crazy with wire!

Introduction to Wire Wrapping

Some of our more challenging wire classes require prior experience with wire -- this is a perfect class to take first! Learn to create earrings, pendants, and charms in this 2 and 1/2 hour workshop. Learn to make custom chains and necklaces with a link-to-link technique. Add a touch of whimsy to your designs with coiled bead caps and spiral head pins. All wire is included.

Jigtacular Earrings

Are you ready for a cool new pattern to use on your jig? Do you just want to learn how to use a jig? Either way, Krystal will show you how to use twisted sterling wire to create elegant earrings. Knotless Netting (NEW!)

Adapt this ancient technique used by fishermen to make nets, and use wire to create interesting cages around beads. We will use wire to create a bloom-like pattern for the front and back of flat stones, and then alter the technique slightly to embellish round or chunky stones. This is an intermediate level class, and all students should understand how to do a "bound loop." Sterling wire is included.

Get "wired" in this one-night wire-wrapping extravaganza. Learn to make jewelry by creating links with bound loops of wire instead of cord. Use all the same beads, or mix it up with many different shapes, sizes, colors or materials -- the sky is the limit! Mick will focus part of the class on design, and show you how to add soldered rings or funky chain between the beads for a more contemporary look. Want to take a more challenging wire class? Magic Carpet (NEW!)

Learn to crochet wire into a "magic carpet" encrusted with beads. Mick will talk about how to determine the gauge of your crochet to precisely fit your cuff to your wrist. Learn how to incorporate beads into the weave to make this cuff shimmer. Previous crochet experience is not necessary.

Orbital Obsession (NEW!)

Do you know why the caged bead sings? Mick does! Come learn the secret for yourself, and bring your power tools! We're gonna show you how to use a drill to make super cool coils to encapsulate those amazing beads we love. As an added bonus, we will make twisted wire accent rings to "lift and separate" those coiled beads. You need to know how to do a bound wire loop for admittance to this class.

Rock Candy Wristlet (NEW!)

So delicious looking, you'll have to stop yourself from licking your arm! Use wire, coiled wire, tiny metal spacers, crystals, seed beads (and the kitchen sink?) to make this dazzling bracelet. Mick has been wearing this one around the store for months while she tried to tweak it until the design was just right. Now it's ready -- are you? Can you handle 20 people a day grabbing your wrist and drooling on your rock candy gem? We'll set it off with a candy-crusted handmade clasp.

Seriously Spiraled

Do you love spirals? Come learn how to bend and hammer wire into an awesome spiral link bracelet and matching earrings. In the first session, we'll teach you the basic link, then come back for the second session, when you'll learn how to make a handmade clasp and descending spiral earrings. That's when it gets serious. Seriously fun! For this one, we revised a class that was once taught under the name Spiral Spinal Bracelet.

Seed beads and wire? Leave it to Mick to try to combine these two rarely-combined materials into a beautiful, spiraling galaxy of earring magic. Learn the basic technique, and then Mick will show you variations that produce wildly different looks. These earrings can be classic and simple, or wild and bold just by choosing different beads. Leave class with at least 2 different styles in your repertoire, then go home inspired to create many others. Oh and did we mention -- no needles to thread?

Viking Knitting
Instructed by Mick
Come learn to knit like the Vikings? Seriously, this is an old technique of intertwining fine gauge wire that looks very difficult but is so easy to learn. Spend an afternoon learning how to knit the wire and then finish it off into a bracelet. At the end of class, you get to keep the wooden dowel and draw plate for all of your future knitting. You will leave with an understanding of single and double knitting techniques as well as a finished bracelet.

Wire Embrace (NEW!)

Pick beautiful focal beads and embrace them with coils of wire and fanciful findings. We'll create coils and then learn how to intricately lace beads, findings, wire, and whatever else we can think of together to create a bracelet like none you have ever seen. Students for this class should have experience with wire and be able to produce a bound loop.

Wrapping Stones, Rocks & Crystals

Do you have stones without holes that you have been trying to find something to do with? Learn to wrap those stones and crystals with wire to create one-of-a-kind designs. From simple cages to more complex basket weave styles, create THREE different wrapping techniques -- all in this 3-hour workshop! Wire is included.
