Nomadic Notions in Austin offers a wide variety of classes, with one occurring almost every night. Our classes are scheduled in three month catalogues, so check back for new opportunities four times a year!

Another great benefit of taking our classes is that every student receives a 20% discount off anything in the store on the night of their class (with some limited exceptions).

General Beading

Afternoon Earrings
Instructed by Michelle
If you prefer to take our classes during the day instead of at night, then this is a perfect way to spend an afternoon learning how to make the simple loops or more secure bound loops required to make earrings. We will also talk about how to incorporate bead caps, chandelier findings, fancy headpins, and chain into your designs. The format for this class is similar to Let's Make Earrings.

Back to Basics Bead Stringing

Have you been struggling with necklace and bracelet design techniques? Do you want to learn the basic techniques to attach a clasp and use a bead design board successfully? We'll get you up to speed in this quick two-hour class that will send you home wearing a necklace and dreaming of ideas for your next one!

Bead Brunch

Come join our knowledgeable staff on the 4th Sunday of the month -- check the dates below! Bring your handouts, we'll have the hot coffee and jewelry expertise. Beginning Jewelry Assembly

Four session class: the first step to your new beading addiction. Learn the basics so you can make beautiful jewelry on your own. Over the course of this four-week class, you will make earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. This comprehensive format discusses tools, findings, stringing materials, beads, and their history. This is both a lecture and a hands-on course, so get ready to learn and have a great time making several wearable art pieces.

Grab some friends and spend a night with us having fun and learning to make your own earrings. You can even bring a bottle of wine. Let's Make Earrings Too (NEW!)

Have you ever wanted to make gorgeous chandelier earrings? This is the class for you! In this one-night workshop, we will teach you how to wire-wrap those tricky "top-drilled" beads, especially those fancy stones with very small holes. Eva will also teach you her special "sloppy wrap" technique to enhance the top of the stone. Some wire experience is helpful.

Madd About Leather

This basic "leather 101 class" is perfect for beginners. It includes a fabulous leather kit with a wide range of sizes to work with. Those of you already addicted to beads can take this class to supplement your existing knowledge and add a new cord to your stringing repertoire. Have you always wanted to make an adjustable sliding knot for your favorite pendant or learn how to use pre-made leather coil crimps, or even make your own? Try Madd About Leather and leave not only with a new skill, but 3 necklaces that make great gifts.

Multi-Strand Bracelet

Are you ready to move beyond basic stringing? This class covers three different ways to finish off multi-strand bracelets, with two distinct looks to choose from. You'll learn tips for effective design, the purpose of a spacer bar, and how to select and use cones. If you have ever been frustrated with a bracelet that just won't hold a twist, the "secret braid" technique that Eva reveals will be a revelation.

Teen Earrings (NEW!)

Do you have a daughter who is bored this summer? This class is specifically for younger students ages 10 - 16 years old. She'll be the envy of all her friends on the first day back to school with her new earrings that she made herself. You are never too young to start learning to make your own earrings. Michelle will teach her what she needs to know to design and create unique earrings. Techniques covered will include: simple loops, wrapped loops, component selection, adding chain, and design tips.

Knotting Skills

Knotting Knight

Nothing sets off a beautiful set of pearls (or beads) like knotting. Make the ordinary extraordinary just by perfecting the simple knotting technique. Mick will show you three different ways to produce consistent, precise knots in between beads. We will also discuss how to use bead tips and cord selection. The rest is up to you -- can you say practice, ladies?

Seed Bead Work

Bead Fishies
Instructed by Laura
Fish are considered lucky in many cultures, and these tiny guardians make wonderful pendants, earrings, or key chains. They would be fabulous Christmas tree ornaments, or give them to your friends as gifts! Come join us for a single afternoon and create a sculptural beaded fish. A familiarity with peyote stitch is recommended for this class. You will love their little open-mouthed expressions!

Beaded Embroidered Pendant (NEW!)
Instructed by Laura
Pendants are so versatile! You can wear them on chain, leather, silver or gold slides, or you can even create your own necklace to match. How would you like to learn to make your own bead embroidered pendant? We're going to spend a couple of nights learning fun embroidery and bead weaving techniques and exercising our creativity, and in the end, we'll each go home with our own beautiful beaded pendant. Cleopatra Necklace (NEW!)
Instructed by Jill
A necklace with the feel of Egyptian royalty is what you'll make in this class. Using multiple bead sizes will give a gentle cruve to your herringbone so it will drape perfectly around your neck. Adding several different types of embellishment will be covered as well as how to make your necklace bigger and more dramatic if you desire.

Dancing Waves

Everyone will want to know how it's made when you wear this bracelet. Using increasing brick stitch, you'll make waves of color dance together, and before you have the first one done you'll already be planning new color schemes for your next one! While you won't complete this bracelet in class, you'll come close as it's a quick project.

Dazzling Dutch Spiral
Instructed by Jill
Round and round it goes -- Mick won't stop until it reaches her toes! At least that's what Jill's guessing! Dutch Spiral is a variation on Peyote Spiral that allows you to make unique and dramatic spiral shapes, with draping sections and tight stitched sections intermixed. It can even be created with bugle beads!

Diamond Cuff

Are diamonds a girls best friend? Well, of course, and these diamonds are no different! Create a stunning bracelet using semiprecious stones, Swarovski crystals or pearls, and seed beads woven into diamonds. While this cuff is made of 2 rows of diamonds, we'll also cover how to create a single row diamond necklace. Add the double diamond stitch to your repertoire.

Enchanted Evenings Bracelet (NEW!)
Instructed by Laura
Spend a few evenings learning the enticing circular brick stitch. You'll start by making some whimsical bead mandalas, and then join them together. Then Laura will show you how to add "blooms," until they all come together in a sparkling bracelet so mesmerizing you won't be able to take your eyes off it. This project is time-consuming (oh, there will be homework!), but the result is well worth the effort.

Looking GOOD! Don't wait for a special occasion to wear this bracelet -- it goes just as well with jeans as it does with a LBD (little black dress) and you're just the Foxy Mama to do it! It's part netting with a little right-angle weave thrown in, and oh, those crystals again! Yummmm.

Ionic Column Bracelet
Instructed by Jill
Bugle beads are cool, but it can be difficult to figure out what to do with them. Come make a nifty bracelet while you learn tricks to making sharp bugle edges safe in your seed bead pieces. This is another great beginner class for those curious about seed beads. Jill's students are overachievers who usually make more than one bracelet -- careful, you might be hooked!

Leaf-Tipped Lariat (NEW!)

This filled very quickly last quarter, so we had to offer it again immediately. With so many long necklaces around these days, you might as well make yours really special to stand out. Jill's new lariat necklace utilizes a double spiral stitch to create a substantial rope, and fringed tassels create a special finishing touch. A sparkly and unique bracelet that can be woven in one night -- that's about as good as it gets! Peyote 101 (NEW!)

Ever try to read one of those graphs in the magazines, but couldn't figure out how to start it, or even follow it? In Peyote 101, we'll learn how to start and follow a peyote graph while making a swirling patterned bracelet using large Delicas. This is a great way to learn a valuable skill, but with bigger beads to make it easy. After taking this class, you'll be able apply this pattern to different bead sizes or shapes ... (Rebecca's thinking triangles). You will leave with the knowledge to read any peyote graph, or even make your own!

Russian Splendor Necklace

Smashing Spiral Ndebele Necklace

Classic, simple, attention-getter. These are all great words to describe the necklace (or bracelet -- or both!) we'll make in this two-night class. You can choose a single color for a subtle spiral look, or alternate two colors for a more obvious twist. We will cover multiple clasp options on night two. "Ndebele" is the African word for herringbone -- and we'll even teach you how to pronounce it in class!

Tubular Herringbone Earrings

Ready to make seed bead earrings? This class is the second in a series developed by Rebecca; these earrings unite tubular herringbone stitch with varying lengths of chain and drops to create an elegant look. This is great for beginners, because we will learn both a seed bead stitch and some wire-working techniques. And did we mention it's fast?! Advanced Wrapping Stones

Have you been waiting for the next big thing in wrapping stones? You’ll learn how to wrap a free floating crystal point and how to wrap those difficult-to-set cabochons. You must have taken our class Wrapping Stones, Rocks, and Crystals prior to signing up for this advanced level class. Wire and crystal points are included. This class is perfect for the experienced wire wrapper looking for a phase two class.

Captivating Cascade

This is a great class to learn or practice your bound loop technique while creating a unique pendant with those leftover beads from past projects you can't figure out what to do with. Using link chain, an assortment of beads and wire-wrapping skills, you can create a beautiful focal piece for any necklace or hang it from a chain for a look to wear every day. You've been seeing this one all over town, in catalogues, and on TV; now you can style one for your own tastes.

Clasps 1

Wouldn't it be great if your clasps looked as unique as your one-of-a-kind necklace? Now you can make special clasps at a fraction of the cost of regular ones. Decorative Wire Links

Swirls, twirls and open spirals done freehand (no jigs here, ladies). Learn five different wire links in this one-night workshop. Mick will show you how to add your own personality and a little flair to your designs with wire. If you already work with wire, you will love what doors this class will open in your creative mind! Oh, and we'll play with square wire and hammers too! Previous wire experience is recommended. All wire is included. Ear Wires 1

Spiral studs, French wires, and even kidney wires are covered in this class that will sass up your earrings! Give your earrings pizzazz while saving $$$. Learn how to make several unique and functional ear wires in this one-night workshop using sterling silver and gold-filled wire (included). We'll teach you how to use a burr-cup, metal files or sandpaper to finish your earrings professionally.

Introduction to Wire Wrapping

Some of our more challenging wire classes require prior experience with wire -- this is a perfect class to take first! Learn to create earrings, pendants, and charms in this 2 and 1/2 hour workshop. Learn to make custom chains and necklaces with a link-to-link technique. Add a touch of whimsy to your designs with coiled bead caps and spiral head pins. All wire is included.

Funky findings used in a clever new way! Mick will teach you to use wire to create bendable easy moving joints. Come finish this bracelet in just two nights in a new back-to-back format. We'll construct the base on night one. Come back on the next night to add the clasp, embellish the edges, and finally discuss variations. We're including the funky findings in the tuition -- you bring the beads and we'll have a good time!

Get "wired" in this one-night wire-wrapping extravaganza. Learn to make jewelry by creating links with bound loops of wire instead of cord. Use all the same beads, or mix it up with many different shapes, sizes, colors or materials -- the sky is the limit! Mick will focus part of the class on design, and show you how to add soldered rings or funky chain between the beads for a more contemporary look. Want to take a more challenging wire class? Take this one first! Or, pair it up with the Decorative Wire Links class to create a look just like this sample.

Orbital Obsession (NEW!)

Do you know why the caged bead sings? Mick does! Come learn the secret for yourself, and bring your power tools! We're gonna show you how to use a drill to make super cool coils to encapsulate those amazing beads we love. As an added bonus, we will make twisted wire accent rings to "lift and separate" those coiled beads. You need to know how to do a bound wire loop for admittance to this class.

Rock Candy Wristlet

We have taught this one a couple of times now, and the variations created by the students are amazing! One student has even started making pendants. Use wire, coiled wire, tiny metal spacers, crystals, seed beads (and the kitchen sink?) to make this dazzling bracelet. Mick has been wearing this one around the store for months while she tried to tweak it until the design was just right. Now it's ready -- are you? Can you handle 20 people a day grabbing your wrist and drooling on your rock candy gem? We'll set it off with a candy-crusted handmade clasp. So delicious looking, you'll have to stop yourself from licking your arm!

Spiral Nebula Earrings

Seed beads and wire? Leave it to Mick to try to combine these two rarely-combined materials into a beautiful, spiraling galaxy of earring magic. Viking Knitting - Advanced

Advanced knitting for advanced Vikings? Seriously, everybody who has taken Viking knitting in the past, come on back and "kick it up a notch." This time we will be using multiple wires, altering and embellishing the knitting, and finally adding beads (of course). Students must understand how do Viking Knitting.

Wire Bezels (NEW!)

We've been teaching lots of seed bead classes lately on how to make bezels for cabochons and Mick's been a little jealous. So now we have a class for making bezels around stones/cabochons out of wire. Make bezels with a "little twist," so to speak. This is not a beginner class; you will need to have some previous wire experience, or have taken some other wire classes at the store.

Wire Wrap Rings 1

In this one-night workshop, you will learn how to make simple custom wire-wrapped rings using beads to complete a look that's uniquely yours. Start with simple rings made entirely of wire and by the end of class progress to more advanced designs incorporating beads. Go home with at least 4 different rings, and ideas for many more. Wire is included.

Wired Charm (NEW!)
Instructed by Rebecca
Ready to get wired with an extravaganza of spiral charms? This class is a wire-worker's dream! You'll finish your project, and learn lots of techniques to use in other applications. Think of it as wire boot camp 102! We'll start with basic wire techniques -- making headpins and simple loops and then move to more advanced techniques -- open triangle spirals, folded spirals, double spirals, spiral with infinity, and spiral links. Did I mention there are a lot of spirals? So bring your beads and get wired! Chain is included, but we are are gonna make everything else -- that's right ladies, Rebecca is gonna teach you to make your own clasp, too!

Wrapping Stones, Rocks & Crystals

Do you have stones without holes that you have been trying to find something to do with? Learn to wrap those stones and crystals with wire to create one-of-a-kind designs. From simple cages to more complex basket weave styles, create THREE different wrapping techniques -- all in this 3-hour workshop! Wire is included. You can also check out this student sample by Melissa Lipiac -- those are all marbles, and none of them have holes!

You have got to see the new styles of chain we have been getting! Use large funky chain to put a new spin on an easy technique and make this year's hottest style straight out of Vogue. Big and bold or dainty and sophisticated just by selecting the style of chain and beads. This is another great class to learn the wrapped loop technique for some of the more advanced wire classes.
