Nomadic Notions in Austin offers a wide variety of classes, with one occurring almost every night. Our classes are scheduled in three month catalogues, so check back for new opportunities four times a year!

Another great benefit of taking our classes is that every student receives a 20% discount off anything in the store on the night of their class (with some limited exceptions).

General Beading

Back to Basics Bead Stringing
Instructed by Mick
If you want to get into beading, this is an awesome first class. Mick will get you up to speed in this quick, two-hour workshop that will send you home dreaming of ideas for your next necklace! She will also cover different types of clasps, tools, and how to use a bead design board. Instruction will also include an optional memory wire bracelet.

Bead Brunch
With Nomad Staff
Open (and free) to all former students of Nomadic Notions on the 4th Sunday of the month. Do you have a class project that you have never finished? Do you need a little reminder for a technique you learned in one of our classes? Come to the store Sunday morning between 10:00 am and noon for coffee, pastries, and Nomad help with any of your old classes. You can also just come to hang out and meet up with other students. Please bring the handout from your class if you need specific help.

Beaded Tassel
Instructed by Rebecca
In this one evening workshop, you will create a unique multi-strand pendant by stringing beads on heat-treated nylon. Add a personal touch by finishing each strand with a charm. You can really make this one dazzle by adding fibers into the tassel as well. Couple this technique with a basic strung necklace (after class) and you will create a showpiece that looks a lot more complicated than it really is. This class is only offered twice a year.

Beginning Jewelry Assembly

Four session class: This is one of our most popular classes! Learn the basics of construction so you can make beautiful jewelry for yourself and your friends. Over the course of this four-week class, you will make earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. This comprehensive format discusses tools, findings, stringing materials, beads, and their history. This is both a lecture and a hands-on course, so get ready to learn and have a great time making several wearable art pieces. Due to its popularity, we are offering more sessions of this class in the evenings and on Saturday mornings.

Learn to make this season's coolest earrings, inspired by the fashion world's favorite silhouette -- the trapeze dress! Using wire, chain, and beads, Meredith will teach you to create some seriously swingin' earrings that will send you "acrobatting" atop the trendsetters!

Color: Reactions and Interactions (NEW!)
Instructed by Meredith
Using the techniques and exercises developed by Bauhaus artist Josef Albers, this course applies his principles of color sensitivity directly to the world of the beader. Train your eye to focus on what happens visually when colors interact instead of what should "logically" occur (and often doesn't). This one-night class will have you exploring color interactions while creating a bracelet to demonstrate what you have learned.

Crazy Candy & Crystal Creations (NEW!)
Instructed by Meredith
Create a fun and funky bracelet and pendant that will satiate any jewelry-makers sweet tooth. Using nostalgic candies and shellac, Meredith will teach you how to turn fun treats into a link-to-link bracelet, as well as a pendant complete with Swarovski crystal dangles. This class is a great introduction to the world of "found art" jewelry.

Create a Pendant

Every time we make a pendant in this style, it flies out of the store! Spice up that boring old focal bead by turning it into a funky, cool pendant using chain and wire-wrap techniques. Come in and look at the pendant carousel and be inspired. Whether you incorporate them into a beaded necklace, or just wear them on a chain, let Mick show you how to add a little razzle-dazzle to your designs. Wire is included.

Dazzling Donuts

Circles are everywhere! Learn about a variety of styles and sizes of donuts that can be used in jewelry. In this one-night class, you will learn how to make two quick and easy necklaces that are fun to wear and are also great for gifts. You will also learn a variety of options to finish off your leather using leather crimps and a clasp. Prepare yourself for dazzling donuts!

Fantastic Elastic

Have you ever struggled putting on a bracelet that has a clasp? Learn to sidestep that problem by making slip on elastic bracelets instead. This class will take you through the processes of bracelet design and construction and you will learn two techniques for successfully finishing them off using elastic cord. This class is an easy introduction to the world of bead stringing for children or adults wanting to test out the water in a quick one night class. Elastic is included.

Finishing Touches

What is a crimp cover? Do I have to use a crimping tool when I use crimp beads? What's the difference between a base metal crimp and a crimp tube? When do I use a split ring, versus a soldered ring, versus a jump ring? These questions and many more will be answered as we discuss how to make finish your jewelry and make it more professional looking. Mick will make this class informative as it is fun!

Want to learn how to make your own earrings and stop paying department store prices? We'll teach you all the tricks you need to know for making custom earrings (including chandelier styles). Madd About Leather

This basic "leather 101 class" is perfect for beginners. It includes a fabulous leather kit with a wide range of sizes to work with. Those of you already addicted to beads can take this class to supplement your existing knowledge, and add a new cord to your stringing repertoire. Have you always wanted to make an adjustable sliding knot for your favorite pendant, or learn how to use pre-made leather coil crimps, or even make your own? Try Madd About Leather and leave not only with a new skill, but three necklaces too!

Multi-Strand Bracelet

Are you ready to move beyond basic stringing? This class covers three different ways to finish off multi-strand bracelets, with two distinct looks to choose from. You'll learn tips for effective design, the purpose of a spacer bar, and how to select and use cones. If you have ever been frustrated with a bracelet that just won't hold a twist, the "secret braid" technique that Eva reveals will be a revelation.

Rational Chaos (NEW!)

Ever wonder how to achieve that trendy, textured "random" look in your necklaces? In this low/intermediate level class, Meredith will teach her special formula that will allow you to create an asymmetrical look that appears "random," but was methodically made with ease! A great class to inspire all your designs, "Rational Chaos" will get you thinking outside the box! Some familiarity with crimping Beadalon is preferred, but experience in working with wire and making simple loops is a must.

Knotting Skills

Are you tired of spending big money to re-knot your broken necklaces? You can learn to knot between beads just like a pro and save a whole lot of money in the process! Learn everything from choosing cord to finishing techniques in just one evening. Several methods will be taught; one is sure to be right for you. Nothing looks as nice or drapes as well as a knotted necklace -- come see for yourself!

Seed Bead Work

Bubbles and Bumps (NEW!)

Herringbone is a great stitch made even better when you add in "bubbles" and "bumps" made of seed beads of different sizes. You can make a bracelet or a necklace or both! Add in more bubbles, or use just a few for a focal point -- the choice is yours!

Caduceus Chain (NEW!)

Twists and turns, this chain has them both! In this class, we'll create two curvy strips, then intertwine them together. We'll use this great technique and a snap clasp to make a seamless bracelet, but we'll be sure to inspire you to make nifty necklace straps to show off your seed beady pendants after class.

Cellini Spiral (NEW!)

Time to learn a new "twist" on a classic technique? Try the Cellini Spiral! This simple stitch can be used independently to create a bracelet (what we'll do in class) or incorporated as a chain to showcase your other beady creations. With so many variations in applications and size, this is definitely a stitch you'll want to know. Magnetic clasp included.

Ahh! Wow! Gorgeous! How do you react to Swarovski Crystals and seed beads? Learn to link together chains of crystals and seed beads using right angle weave and dimensional right angle weave. Bracelet or necklace -- you decide the length, then we'll complete your chain with a unique peyote toggle. Come see what kind of reaction you'll have.

Everyone will want to know how it's made when you wear this bracelet. Using increasing brick stitch, you'll make waves of color dance together, and before you have the first one done you'll already be planning new color schemes for your next one! While you won't complete this bracelet in class, you'll come close as it's a quick project.

Dazzling Dutch Spiral (NEW!)

Round and round it goes -- Mick won't stop until it reaches her toes! At least that's what I'm guessing! Dutch Spiral is a variation on Peyote Spiral that allows you to make unique and dramatic spiral shapes, with draping sections and tight stitched sections intermixed. It can even be created with bugle beads!

Are diamonds a girls best friend? Well, of course, and these diamonds are no different! Create a stunning bracelet using semiprecious stones, Swarovski crystals or pearls, and seed beads woven into diamonds. While this cuff is made of 2 rows of diamonds, we'll also cover how to create a single row diamond necklace.

Right-angle weave can be intimidating at first, but we'll take the pain out of it and you'll see how versatile it can be. Freeform Peyote Bracelet

Back by popular demand. We haven't taught this one in almost 4 years! Have you ever wondered what you could do if you just let your creativity take over? Your imagination will run absolutely wild with this fun and freeing technique. We will play with peyote stitch, fringe, surface embellishment, and whatever we can pull from our mental toy box. The end result will be a bracelet you probably never saw coming!

Hey seed beaders! Interested in working with leather? This class applies two individual techniques to LEATHER! In night one, we'll learn how to make a cleverly-concealed magnetic clasp with peyote stitch. Then come back for night two and we'll use right-angle weave to adorn the leather with loads of sparkly crystals. The leather and sterling magnetic clasp are included in the tuition.

Have you seen our new Swarovski Crystal squares and buttons? Create a contemporary, sleek, stunning bracelet with the glamorous look of crystal. You can find this look in magazines and expensive stores for hundreds of dollars, or find it on your own wrist for a fraction of the cost. The flowing feel of the links will make you feel like a million dollars. Laura will also show you how to modify the technique to create matching earrings.

Peyote Patchwork Pendant

Take your peyote technique to a whole new level and learn circular and diamond shaping techniques. Challenge yourself by combining colors, shapes, sizes, and finishes into a single, funky pendant. It's a seed bead project that uses up your leftover seed beads and is quick to finish. After making the pendant, go home and use the same technique to make a neat patchwork bracelet, too!

Princess Peyote Cuff Bracelet

Don't be afraid of mixing colors! Explore our new colors of Delicas and learn how to combine beads with multiple colors and finishes to create an individualized work of art for your wrist while we teach you peyote stitch. The second night, you'll add a froth of fringe accent beads, and attach a hidden clasp so you're wearing a solid cuff of regal beads! We'll see if you can stop at making just one.

Plain Jane goes a little wild by adding oodles of ruffles to her wrist! You'll be surprised at how fast this little peyote band becomes daring when you add herringbone ruffles to the edges as you learn to increase the stitch.

Russian Splendor Necklace (NEW!)

A little flash and a whole lot of WOW -- this was the first class to fill on the last schedule so we had to do it again just to make sure you could get your fix! This necklace, fit for a Tsarina, catches the light with firepolish beads inset within the netted tube. Add in the detachable mix-and-match Russian Leaves to make a good thing even better. The leaves also make great earrings!

Smashing Spiral Ndebele Necklace

Classic, simple, attention-getter. These are all great words to describe the necklace (or bracelet -- or both!) we'll make in this two-night class. You can choose a single color for a subtle spiral look, or alternate two colors for a more obvious twist. We will cover multiple clasp options on night two. "Ndebele" is the African word for herringbone -- and we'll even teach you how to pronounce it in class!

Treasure Bracelet

Create a full, luxurious looking bracelet, and use your tiny treasures and special beads in this afternoon workshop. This class is offered in square stitch, an off-loom technique that allows you to weave without a loom, or those annoying warp threads!!! Many of our students create themed bracelets by adding charms.

Tubular Herringbone Earrings (NEW!)

Ready to make seed bead earrings? This class is the second in a series developed by Rebecca; these earrings unite tubular herringbone stitch with varying lengths of chain and drops to create an elegant look. This is great for beginners, because we will learn both a seed bead stitch and some wire-working. And did we mention it's fast?! Chain, jump rings, wire, and wooden mandrels are included.

Get the look of lattice, without the gardening! In this class, we'll use crystals and seed beads to weave together two layers of netting. Then we'll finish the lattice with an elegant multi-strand bar and toggle.

Wire Techniques

Advanced Wrapping Stones
Instructed by Krystal
Have you been waiting for the next big thing in wrapping stones? You’ll learn how to wrap shark’s teeth, make a free-floating crystal point wrap, and learn how to wrap those difficult-to-set cabochons. You must have taken Wrapping Stones, Rocks, and Crystals prior to signing up for this advanced level class. Wire, sharks teeth, and crystal points are included. This class is perfect for the experienced wire-wrapper looking for a phase two class.

Students are always amazed at how simple this technique is to master. This class combines beads and wire in an untraditional but beautiful presentation. Great for gifts, parties, or any special occasion!

This class is open to any student who has taken Clasps 1. This workshop will teach you more advanced techniques for making your own clasps, safety catches, decorative scroll clasps, multi-strand clasps, and more. All wire is included. Swirls, twirls and open spirals done freehand (no jigs). Learn five different wire links in this one-night workshop. Mick will show you how to add your own personality and a little flair to your designs with wire. If you already work with wire, you will love what doors this class will open in your creative mind! Oh, and we'll play with square wire and hammers too! Previous wire experience is recommended. Wire is included.

Tired of spending money on the same old ear wires? Give your earrings pizzazz while saving $$$. Learn how to make several unique and functional ear wires in this one-night workshop using sterling silver and gold-filled wire (included). We'll teach you how to use a burr-cup, metal files, or sandpaper to finish your earrings professionally. Spiral studs, French wires, and even kidney wires are covered in this class that will sass up your earrings!

Wire boot camp! Learn to create earrings, pendants and charms in this 2-and-1/2-hour workshop. Make custom chains and necklaces with a link-to-link technique. Use all the same beads or mix it up with many different shapes, sizes, colors or materials -- the sky is the limit! Learn how to add soldered rings between the beads for a more contemporary look. Create a wire-linked accessory that is both flirty and flexible.

Wire Jig Necklace

Have you always wanted to work with a jig but weren't sure how? Design a beautiful necklace combining wire and beads that looks complicated, but isn't. Learn how to set up and use a wire jig and make swirled links out of wire. After creating the links, you will learn to connect them while adding accent beads. Great for beginners and advanced students as well. Go home with a project that others will envy.

Have you been collecting unique beads for that perfect project? Why not show them off in a "Wire Charm Bracelet?" In this class, we will create headpins, including simple, open triangle spirals, and spirals (with variations) to showcase your amazing beads. We'll also create a double spiral charm and a spiral link to add just a little more charm.

Do you have stones without holes that you have been trying to find something to do with? Learn to wrap those stones and crystals with wire to create one-of-a-kind designs. From simple cages to more complex basket weave styles, create THREE different wrapping techniques -- all in this 3-hour workshop! Wire is included.

Y-Necklace

You have got to see the new styles of chain we have been getting! Use large, funky chain to put a new spin on an easy technique, and make this year's hottest style straight out of Vogue. Mick will teach you two different styles of wire-wrapping, and then you can let your imagination run wild with possibilities. Don't worry though, you can make them dainty and sophisticated, too, just by selecting the right type of chain and beads. Mick will discuss both style options.
